Alan Jones Racing Driver

In his only IndyCar start and showing he had lost none of the speed, skill and determination that took him to the World Championship, Jones drove Andretti's Lola T900-Cosworth to third place behind Jacques Villeneuve Sr. Both Jones and Longhurst were among the quickest cars that season, however the Nissan cars driven by Jim Richards and Mark Scaife continued to reign supreme in the championship. Jones is also the last Australian driver to win the Australian Grand Prix, winning the 1980 event at Calder Park Raceway, having lapped the field consisting mostly of Formula 5000 cars while he was driving his Formula One Championship winning Williams FW07B. Rarely making a mistake, Jones was often able to capitalise on other's misfortune where he would slowly climb the field and on occasions climb into points positions. Jones had another frustrating qualifying taking eighth once again, watching on as Reutemann took pole. However Renault's poor reliability record would haunt them once again in Germany with both cars retiring.

Jones on the other hand moved to Arnoux's inside and cunningly took the lead from Prost. Outside Formula One racing, Alan has proved a versatile performer in a variety of racing formulae and has excelled in television commentating and as an inspiring speaker. The SKY interview. Tambay retired early on, Jones on the other hand managed to continue on for 28 laps before overheating issues forced him into retirement. By lap 12 he was up into fourth place where he soon overtook the two cars of Jody Scheckter and Hans-Joachim Stuck ahead of him. Jones was racing in America when he was signed by the Shadow team as a replacement for Tom Pryce, who had been killed in a freak racing accident in South Africa. Jones continued to patiently wait for Reutemann to let him through rather than fight him but Reutemann defiantly disobeyed his team not wishing to sacrifice a race win twice in a row. Jones was the man on the move and quickly disposed of Reutemann and Arnoux and began to challenge Alain Prost's Renault for the lead. Jones, however hoped a Formula One return in Long Beach as a former world champion would attract sponsors to him and the team. For the next race in South Africa at Kyalami, Jones further improved by putting his Lola eighteenth on the grid.
